I'm being forced to go. My wife says she has to go, just to see if she feels different. I warned her that I might go all MST3K during the talk, might partake, won't sing and such but she's still determined. The only consolation is that we're skipping our cong (even she wants to avoid that hassle) and going to a former branch office, which I remember has a nice library. The thought of getting some first hand scans is the only thing keeping me from letting her go alone..

Which 'THIS' generation will by no means pass away?
by ThomasCovenant ini know this has been said a thousand times already but oodads posting reminded me of when i got to thinking about the generation teaching at a family get together we had a couple of months ago with some witness relatives and so much wanted to ask this question at the table.
imagine it is the year 1914, and jesus walks into the room and sees these four generations of males.
he says ''this generation will by no means pass away until all these things occur''.. which of the four generations is he talking about?.

The real kicker is realizing that Jesus was talking to his apostles, and thus to their generation. He didn't say "when these things occur that generation..." but was speaking to this generation, the one right in front of him.

I Quit Preaching The "Door To Door and Tract Work" No Time For March 2012.
by Creep Side Congregation inwhy i have stopped preaching door to door, inactive now for march 2012!.
i can't participate in the door to door ministry anymore, how can i guarantee my bible studies won't experience the "dark side"?
are we providing a spiritually safe environment for new believers, free of sex offenders, thieves, gossiping bitter old women and "rock throwing hypocrites"?

Mine's similar to NewChapter; there was a kangaroo at our State Fair, and for days afterward something was bugging me about it. Then suddenly penguins. The impossibility of such rapid evolution and transcontinental migration of so many unique creatures hit me, and when I tried to research the WT Library for answers all I found was an article where they actually endorse the Pangaea theory -- which, of course, doesn't work with the flood model. After that, my doubts started overlapping and the "truth" started collapsing faster than a magically-suspended vapor canopy.
The ironic thing is, the ONLY full public talk I ever gave as a MS was on Noah's flood and how it was possible. Just shows you have to be mentally ready before you can get to that moment.

Why?
by bushido8000 inso after 18 years (since the age of 5) i have converted from the jws to protastant christianity.
i have been biblically shown what i believe to be truths about the trinity, hell, and heaven (ideas that i debated against classical christians for many years) since i left the witnesses.
i read a lot of things on this site (as well as others) that really confuses me.

One of the things that led me to question my faith in the first place was seeing all the evidence of how the global flood was impossible. Sometimes to destroy a structure it's easiest to take out the foundation; knowing that the Bible can't be taken literally made it so much easier to reject 34 years of programming, and once the logic ball starts rolling it's hard to stop (I mean, transubstantiation makes less sense than anything JWs ever came up with).
I'm not an athiest though, more like a agnostic deist (at least at this point).

School is for fools!
by BreathoftheIndianNose inso i'm looking to go to university, as is the norm.
what are the most important things to consider choosing a school and location to study?
and what would you say are the most important things to do in order to benefit from that education and succeed in that field?

If you're looking for a career in Culinary Arts I'd say the most important thing to look for in a school is that it has a working dining area, where senior students actually cook and serve like a real restaurant. I'd assume most do, so next would be the school's reputation in that field, and there are always warious ranking agencies and recognitions a school can have (for example, my school's newspaper was a finalist in the national college Pacemaker awards for overall journalism, which is meaningless to anybody outside our field but for an aspiring journalist it gives a good indication of our school's quality in that area).

Did Church fathers and Jesus see the Bible as metaphor?
by leavingwt indoes anyone here believe that jesus viewed genesis as being a metaphor?
if they believed it to be a historical account about real people, what are the implications?
as a jw, i wasn't allowed to publicly entertain such questions.

slimboyfat: I have never heard anyone ever say "in Gulliver's day when he travelled..." People don't talk about fictional stories that way.
But they do, just not in those words:
"This is just like when Neo took the red pill and his eyes were opened."
"After being away at college I agree with Dorothy, 'There's no Place Like Home.'"
Frequently these are brought up (like the old Chris Farley sketch): "Remember when..." even though those in the conversation know that the incident in question was fictional, they never spell it out to the other. Just reading the conversation would you assume they thought it was real?

I Want to Believe
So I sat here waiting for inspiration to hit. What was taking so long? Where was my demon to guide me in automatic writing?
"Here I am," Dave popped into my head suddenly. He was my demon. I found him in a toy I bought at a pawn shop when I was 13. It was a cool toy, a Star Wars action figure, bounty hunter of some sort. Next thing I knew, a demon was living inside me.
"Where were you?" I was upset and wanted him to know it. "It's hard to write freestyle without a demonic force guiding me."
"Yeah, well you keep your mind too cluttered these days. It's hard to get around in there. You should try emptying it out sometime. You ever think of trying some meditation? OOOH, how about yoga?"
I couldn't help but laugh.
"What's so funny?"
"Nothing. Maybe I should try yoga; maybe I could get a demon that's more helpful. Why couldn't you give me the powers of prediction instead of this automatic writing nonsense?"
I could feel Dave's hurt feelings. He took control of my fingers and started typing out a random hateful screed, which somehow morphed into a longform poem about flowers. My fingers stopped.
"My heart's not in it today," he said. He was quiet for a while. "Did you know today is my anniversary?"
I shook my head.
"Yeah... 4400 years this afternoon. I often ask myself if she was worth it. She died before the Flood, did I ever tell you that? We never had any kids. But that was it -- never saw Heaven again. Never wanted to. How could I ever see His face again? I mean, what did He expect? And than Azazel turned out to be a huge d***"
"Maybe it's time you finally told your side of the story. All of it." I put my fingers back over the keyboard.
Dave let off a smile. My fingers danced like never before, and I felt us both moving toward a resolution, at last.
